Return to the Greater Grail

Post by Damascus on Sat Dec 03, 2016 10:22 pm

Shortly before sunrise, Kirei pulled his car onto the street near the Temple once again. He stepped out with Atalanta and walked calmly up the steps. As expected, he could still feel Caster's presence here. He walked up to the main temple, expecting them to already be waiting for them.

Daichi was up early, not having slept much. The problem of the corrupted grail churned in his mind most of the night. Who does it benefit for this marvelous thing to be corrupted? Does the darkness draw from some hesitation, some qualm on the part of the original creators? He was up when any messages arrived, and probably idly working on some refinement to an enchantment when Kirei and Atalanta showed up.

"Good morning," Atalanta greeted. "We've come to further inspect the greater grail." she gave Medea a small smile in greeting.

"Good morning, my dear! Coffee?" Medea raised a thermos and two styrofoam cups.

Daichi came over, ruffling a hand in his hair, and simply took a cup and the thermos and poured himself some coffee. He chugged most of the cup in one go. "Where are the Tohsakas?"

"Oh, yes thank you," Atalanta happily sipped the warm coffee handed to her. "The Tohsakas are still at home. We simply came to take a look at it. Study it a little perhaps."

She tutted at Daichi. "Don't scald your tongue. You can't enunciate your chants with burns."

Kirei nodded in greeting. "Alone, preferably," he added. "We want to make sure everything is safe before everyone approaches it."

Daichi raises an eyebrow at Medea. "Your concern is touching." He turns to Kirei. "Your servant seemed to be having... issues... handling the artifact's aura last night. If you don't mind, I'd strongly prefer all of us going down together, for redundancy. How soon can we expect them to arrive?"

Kirei straightened a little. "There's nothing to worry about. We're prepared to handle it."

Atalanta made her way to the entrance, not waiting for further permission.

"I've no doubt you feel you're prepared. However, in business we categorize knowledge in some useful ways. The Greater Grail certainly has some properties that are known unknowns - we are expecting the unusual from it, within certain bounds. However, one is always wise to anticipate unknown unknowns - the circumstances one cannot imagine that hit one blindsided." He looks over at Atalanta's retreating form, and frowns.

She sighed as Atalanta marched away. "That's... hardly surprising. Shall we?" She followed the archer with a wry smirk. "Besides, whatever happens, we'll learn some unknowns, and perhaps even some was-not-meant-to-be-knowns! Thrills for all!"

He adjusted the neck of his robes again, and gave Daichi a somewhat dangerous look. "As the Mediator, I can assure you I know what I'm doing." He turned to follow Atalanta, and looked back at them again. "We'll come back soon," he said, with a tone that it was not up for debate. He also glared at Medea, giving her a warning look. His fingers itched, prepared to spring a Black Key at any moment.

Medea snorted shallowly with a hand on her hip and rolled her eyes, but stepped no further. Atalanta, at least, could handle herself. She could be content with that.

"Yes, but the question is, what exactly are you doing?" Daichi mused under his breath. He waited until Kirei and Atalanta were out of earshot before addressing Medea. "I don't want to fight them, but we might have to." He got a thought on his face, and started chanting while heading back into his quarters.

"My words go east, west, north and south,
To allied ear a screaming mouth."

This was the fastest and most obvious communication spell he knew. To the Tohsakas he sent, "Kirei is here, 'looking' at the Grail alone. Please get here ASAP."

Back in his room, he set up a square of small 90 degree frame corners on the floor, about a meter by a meter. "Touch one of those, would you?" he asked Medea. "If I did the enchantment correctly, it should allow me to see through the floor using what you can sense magically."

She nodded approvingly and rested a hand on a corner. Dropping into a state of near-meditation, her senses attuned themselves to the chasm below.

Content that Daichi and Medea were not going to follow them, Kirei followed Atalanta down into the chamber. He suspected they might use some kind of surveillance on them, but as long as they stayed out of the chamber, he had some leeway.

The Greater Grail was just as awe-inspiring now as it was before. He gaped up at it, approaching slowly and standing at the crest of the hill. He could feel some kind of strange heat coming off it.

He looked at Atalanta. "I'm not sure how safe it is. What should we do?"

At first Atalanta stopped with Kirei, equally awed by the structure. She began to say, "I..." but she didn't finish before making an almost imperceptible leap to it, until she was face to face with the thing, her nose almost touching. She stared again for a few more seconds, before lifting a solitary finger, and touching it.

Kirei didn't even notice how close Atalanta got for a moment, she had moved so fast. He blinked a few times, watching her raise a finger. His heart jumped into his throat. "Ata--" was all he could get out in time.

The point where Atalanta touched split open like the bark of a tree bursting from the inside, hot black mud spilling out onto the Servant. As soon as it touched her, she could feel her flesh being burned and melted away. She couldn't resist as it pulled her inside, swallowing her body whole and quickly beginning to digest her. She felt her flesh dissolving in an instant and her bones melting down to the core.

Her body was gone, but somehow, her mind was still there, submerged in the mud. Immediately, she is surrounded by screaming voices, howling curses that she hears not with ears, but seem to be coming from inside her mind.

Six billion curses. Enough that, if released into the world, would be enough to kill every human being on the planet. It is All the World's Evils, the darkest wishes of all mankind compressed into one point. All at once Atalanta can see and hear the sins and crimes of every human being all at once. The Grail shows her all the pain and despair of the world, enough to drive anyone insane. Most of those submerged by the curses devour themselves out of madness, and are consumed by the mud.

Somehow, Atalanta is not consumed. Perhaps because she refuses to die, or because some of the mud inside her lends her its strength. She senses some confusion from the Grail. A strange voice comes to her.

"Wh̢y ̡do҉ y͏ou͝ ̢r̨ésís͜t͢?"

Outside, a shocked Kirei lurches forward, even knowing that there is nothing he can do. His mouth hangs open as he watches his Servant get consumed.

Then it feels like something slams him in the shoulder. Pain flares out from his Command Spell, what feels like tendrils of acid spreading out through his skin and into his blood. He grasps his shoulder in pain, just before the strange pain reaches his head. He gasps and shudders, his eyes roll back in his head, and he collapses to the ground.

Medea shrieked and leaped up into a run. Her feet pounded against the ground like a drumbeat, tearing down to the Grail.

"Atalanta!! No!!"

Atalanta screamed, but held on to the pain she was feeling. As her body dissolved she cursed at the thing with her mind to give her form back to her. She wanted to lash out at the screaming people with limbs that were no longer there, but still felt an astounding burning sensation. One voice stood out from the others, asking her a question. Why does she resist? "Why should I not resist?! Put me back!!" her thoughts roared at the entity.

She felt some kind of repulsion, almost disgust, that something absorbed by the mud would dare to keep its independence. Since it could not digest her, it decided to abandon her. With all its strength, it felt the mud crystallizing, a body reforming around her. She was suddenly freed from the roaring pain and hatred as the Grail unceremoniously ejected her.

She landed on the ground next to Kirei, who was still unconscious.

Already, she could feel something was different. Her body felt too solid somehow. Normally, a Servant's body was made only of mana, even when taking physical form. But this was different. This was real flesh and blood.

This...was an old old feeling...
She leaped to her feet, knocking an arrow and trying to aim at something freakishly far. She wanted to see if this thing had taken her powers.
