Final Preparations

Post by Damascus on Fri Jul 29, 2016 5:20 pm

As dawn approached, Lazarus and Caster heard the deafening racket of Yui dragging something heavy up from the basement. Huffing and puffing, she emerged from the basement door with a large chest, sealed with several arcane locks and covered in magical diagrams. She pushed it into her first-floor workshop and wiped her forehead. With Caster establishing a Territory under the basement, she needed her most valuable artifacts out of the way.

She took a deep breath and sat down on the chest. She better take a short sleep before getting to work. Once Caster's Territory was established, she had a lot of preparations to make for the final battle. She couldn't afford to be sleep-deprived. Just to be safe, she better brew some espresso when she woke up.

She leaned out of the door. "Lazarus! Caster! If you're free, I have some ideas for the final battle!"

Lazarus, freshly out of the shower, quickly donned a robe and moved towards the racket, hearing her summon along the way. He found her in her workshop, sweating and resting on the chest. "Yui! Goodness! If you'd said you were moving this thing I could have at least helped you get it up the stairs!" he laughed and began to comb through his hair with his fingers, arranging it into a slightly less disheveled state. "Please do tell me your ideas!"

Yui sat down on the chest and wiped her brow. "Anyway! So, if we have Caster's Territory underground, we should have every advantage if the enemy invades us here. Here's what we know so far:

Archer's Noble Phantasm is incredibly strong, and probably poses the biggest threat. She won't be able to use it underground, so that should allow us to focus our attention on Rider. We still don't know much about his abilities, but Riders are notorious for having strong Noble Phantasms. I'd suggest we focus on getting him out of the way first.

As for Kirei... To be quite honest, he scares me. He was an Executor in the Church, so he is specifically trained to kill mages. Even with the two of us together, he could kill us easily. I suggest we stay out of sight, but not too far from the battle. Irisviel will need to stay on top of the leyline and be protected. We could at least hide her and surround her with homonculi for protection, but we should be ready to jump in at a moment's notice.

Thoughts so far?
"

"I think we should have several homunculi that are modeled after her, and perhaps hide her in plain sight. That way we can keep an eye on her but still make it hard for them to find her. " the mage leaned against the wall and chewed on a fingernail as he thought some more. "If we surround her with homunculi, they'll know something important is there. So I feel like that's not the best idea..."

"The Territory prioritizes close-quarters combat. There are many small paths and alleyways, and I've already planted explosive gems at several dead ends.

My biggest personal concern is Rider; if he makes it too close to me I can guarantee I won't last long against him. As for Fraulein Einzbern, she can be safely tucked away and held under several barriers. There are more than enough false hideaways to confuse, especially if they are treated the same, whether all are closely guarded or not."

"That's true... but at the same time she needs to be well defended. We can have homonculi nearby, but protecting her with magic should suffice. I was also thinking of having homunculi modeled not only after Irisviel, but after me and Lazarus as well. It may not totally fool Kirei, but it can buy us a few seconds."

She listened to Caster and nodded. "I agree, Rider is dangerous for you... We'll need to prioritize Berserker keeping him tied up in melee combat, with you working as support. If we can avoid engaging with Archer altogether until Rider is dealt with, we should be able to wrap up that battle fairly quick."

Lazarus beamed, "I think we have this in the bag! We of course can't say for sure how it will go, but we have so many advantages it'd be hard for us to lose!"

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Lazarus. We still have the two big problems. We don't know the extent of Rider's abilities, or just how far Kirei's skills extend. As far as we know, they could turn the whole tide of battle. Let's not forget he held his own against that Dead Apostle." She took a deep breath. "But, I think you're right; we're as prepared as we can be. All that's left now is where everyone and everything will be placed."

"Well that won't be hard to do!" he coaxed them all to a table, set down a blank paper, and spent many hours and cups of tea plotting exactly where everything would go with his companions.

Having settled on a satisfactory plan, Yui stood to go. "I'm not sure when they're going to attack, but we should at least expect them at nightfall. I'm going to take a short nap, then spend the rest of the day preparing spells."

She hesitated for a moment, averting her eyes and bashfully rubbing one arm.

"Listen... Lazarus. We might not both make it out of this. I don't know if I'll get another chance to say this..."

Her cheeks grew a little red. "Working with you has been... What I mean to say is..." She took another deep breath. "You've been a good friend to me. I wouldn't have thought I'd be working so close to another Master like this, but I'm really glad I am."

"I've... really come to like you. You might be kind of eccentric... and I mean that in the best way!" she quickly added. "A lot of my colleagues probably wouldn't like you, but I think you're a great person. You give mages everywhere a good name."

He laughed as she doubled back on her compliment, and pulled her into a warm hug. "Oh, Miss Yui thank you for your kind words." He gave her a swift kiss on the cheek as he released her. " I know much touching isn't customary in Japan, but where I'm from it would be silly not to hug you! And don't worry, I love being eccentric." he smiled down at her, hands still resting on her shoulders. His cheeks had grown a bit pink as well, and his eyes were dialated and glistening from a mix of attraction and trying not to cry.

Yui giggled and wiped a tear from her eye as well. "It's okay, the Tohsakas have never been all that stereotypically Japanese. Thank you." She returned the kiss to his cheek.

"I sincerely hope we both live through this," he said softly, leaning his forehead against hers. He wanted badly to kiss her, but wasn't sure she would appreciate it, and was also sure that starting such a relationship, even if welcome, in the middle of a war would be a terrible idea. His head usually only swam like this when he inhaled something from a magical potion that he shouldn't have.

Caster covered a smile and discreetly shuffled off to one side, giving them space. He sighed happily at Berserker. "Ah, the bloom of affection flourishes again in the strangest places, doesn't it?"

Yui sighed happily as they leaned together, but when Caster spoke, her modesty and bashfulness abruptly reappeared. She jumped back, her face turning bright red as she nervously readjusted her clothes.

Berserker giggled cutely at the display, then also abruptly leapt into Caster's arms; but wrapping her arms tightly around his torso to show her own affection.

Caster chuckled and leaned in to give Berserker's cheek several kisses, tickling her sides. He swung her around in a circle and let her back on her feet. "I'm very happy to have met you, Berserker. It's an honor to be on the same side, and I wish I could hold on to these memories."

Lazarus had a similar reaction, releasing the young woman and putting space between them. "I wouldn't go that far, Caster." he remarked with a nervous chuckle. " In any case, I should probably put on actual clothing at some point. Exscuse me." the mage hurried off to his room.

Re: Final Preparations

Post by Damascus on Tue Aug 02, 2016 7:04 pm

A few hours later, shortly before noon, Yui was awake and making the final preparations for the night. First, she went around the entire mansion, finding any papers, research, or other items of value for safekeeping. She had already cleaned up a lot of her items over the last few days, but now that the mansion stood to be the summoning area for the Grail, it was more likely than not that the mansion would be destroyed. Thankfully, the magical chest she had taken up from the basement was big enough for the majority of her research and valuables.

On schedule, a moving truck arrived around lunchtime, with a small army of movers coming in to take away whatever furniture and antiques couldn't fit in her chest. With her allies working underground, it was safe to lower the mansion's defenses temporarily to let them inside.

It was sad to see it all go, but it was for the best. Her father would already be distraught if the Tohsaka Mansion was laid to waste, but if they were lucky, all they would have to replace was the building itself.

A couple hours later, the mansion was all but an empty shell, nothing remaining but the light fixtures and curtains over the windows. It was almost eerie.

She tied her hair up in a tight ponytail, then inspected the ten jewels that served as her family's Mystic Codes. Their combined mana would normally be considered excessive for any magical endeavor, but they now seemed somehow insufficient. She tucked them into her blouse's pockets and sleeves.

Finally, there was only one thing left to go. The Treasure Chest itself. She went into her study and undid the various locks that magically sealed it, then creaked open the lid. The inside of the chest stretched out and down, larger on the inside than the outside, somehow containing an entire room in itself. Blueprints and scrolls were tucked away into one corner, potions and jewels in another, and so on. She reached down to a smaller box in one corner and pulled out a short sword.

Compared to the original in Hohenheim's possession, her Azoth was a cheap knockoff, but one that would no doubt still come in handy. She wanted to avoid using it if at all possible, as it served as the base for her own private experiment, but in case she was left with no other choice, she wanted it on her person.

She slid the blade of her Azoth Sword into a sheath hidden just under her long skirt, so just the hilt poked out. She was as ready as she'd ever be.

She had the Treasure Chest brought out to the moving truck and loaded in, then watch the truck drive away forlornly. Then, her work complete, she headed toward the basement stairs to see if Caster's Territory had been completed.

Lazarus was running about through Caster's territory, making sure everything and everyone was in place. Checking, rechecking, and smoothing over any perceived flaws in the defenses or the homunculi. He had armed some of the homunculi with mines inside of them. It would double as a strong mana presence, making them more convincing, and a weapon if the homunculus was confronted.

Re: Final Preparations

Post by fuyumin on Sun Aug 07, 2016 8:55 pm

A cool Alpine breeze touched Yui's cheek as soon as she came into the territory. The little village where Caster, no, Phillipus von Hoenheim worked splayed out before her, almost like something out of a storybook. Homunculi milled around the town, dressed in period attire and decked with familiar faces - Lazarus, Irisviel, and even Yui herself.

The village was tightly packed, seeming bigger than it truly was, with no easy way to get to the roofs. The sky looked as wide an expanse as ever, but something about it seemed much closer and low. The footroads were like a maze, running to multiple dead ends, false starts, and secret passages. There were traps at several intersections, including double-bluffs leading to nowhere. With Lazarus running around adding his own traps and mines, the danger increased, despite the town being as sunny and welcoming as ever.

Caster approached with arms and smile both wide. "Wilkommen auf Salzburg!" He wore a gentleman's doublet and breeches and a handsome floppy hat, getting into the mood himself.

When she got to the basement stairs, she saw Irisviel already there waiting for her. The Einzbern woman leaned heavily against the wall, seemingly short on breath, but she smiled regardless.

"I'm afraid I will need some assistance getting downstairs."

Hooking Irisviel's arm over her shoulders, the mage helped the weak Irisviel carefully down the stairs.

Whatever discomfort Yui had felt seeing dopplegangers of herself milling about vanished when she saw Caster's floppy hat. She stifled a snicker.

"That's a, um, wonderful outfit you have there," she giggled. "I have to say, I'm very impressed! They're going to have a hard time fighting their way through this place!"

"I'm ready to make our final defenses. All that remains are where me, Lazarus, and Irisviel should position ourselves. On a roof, in the streets, or in a building?"
