Re: Tohsaka Mansion: A Post-Battle Rendezvous

It was around midnight when Yui checked the clock. Sleep was pulling at her again, so she took one last drink of water before she stumbling back toward her room.

Then she heard a bloodcurdling scream. She jumped, looking around before noticing that it was coming from the jewel around her neck.

She pulled it out of her shirt and looked deep into it. The vision was already centered on the familiar that heard the sound. It was perched on a rooftop overlooking a small alley. She could barely see in the heavy darkness, a dark figure dragging another figure out of a broken window.

She jogged to Lazarus room and knocked on the door.

"Sorry to wake you," Yui called through the door. "But our kidnapper is striking again."

Lazarus blinked sleepily as he heard the knock, and Miss Yui's voice. When his brain processed what she said, however, he shot out of bed. He quickly pulled on some pants and shoes. "I'll be right there Miss Yui!" he called as he dressed. He didn't call for Caster, assuming he had heard as well and would be following them. He threw open the door. "Lead the way!"

Caster yawned broadly, rising from Lazarus's shoulder before he could be unceremoniously dumped away. "Kidnapper? From those missing persons cases?" He stretched, his back popping quietly.

After slipping on his robes and shoes, he followed after Lazarus.

"Seems that way," Yui answered. "Same area as the other victims, downtown Miyama. Are you two ready for battle, if the need arises?"

"Absolutely." the mage replied. He turned to Caster, "Are you doing alright? I know it's been a difficult day." he put a comforting hand on his shoulder, rubbing slightly with his thumb.

Caster smiled somewhat sleepily, resting his hand on Lazarus's. "I should have recovered well by now, but I never was much of a sudden riser. Thank you, though." He rubbed the heel of a hand against his eye, massaging the sore fatigue away.

"So, Miss Yui, can you narrow down our insidious offender's location any further?"

Yui stared into her jewel, watching the dark figure move down the alleyway. The figure in their arms was limp now, unresponsive. Hopefully, not dead.

Then she blinked, and they were gone. She focused hard, scanning the alleyway, but they had simply vanished into the shadows.

"Downtown Miyama, about two miles south of the cafe we fought at," she answered. "But I just lost track of them. We'd better move quickly."

She stepped into her room to quickly change into her proper clothes. Berserker was already awake, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes with one hand. They came back out into the hallway to meet Lazarus and Caster.

It took the group of four half an hour to get to downtown Miyama. Though her familiars hadn't yet picked up any sign of the kidnapper or victim, when they got close, they started to sense a magic signature.

A Servant was nearby, and moving farther away to the east. "This way!" Yui yelled, turning down a side street in pursuit.

After another ten minutes of running, though, she slid to a stop. The Servant had stopped moving. It was about half-a-mile away at this point; it must have been close to large bridge over the Mion River.

The Servant was staying put, and making no attempt to hide its mana signature. It was as though it wanted to be found.

"Something doesn't seem right," Yui warned. "We might be walking into a trap."

"Well, sometimes the best defense is a good offense," Lazarus suggested. "Perhaps we should take the bait? We may be able to suprise them if we come down hard enough. My second suggestion would be to do some long distance spells from here. Most of us are talented mages, so we could possibly even set their trap off from far away."

"Good idea," said Yui. "I'm not eager to get caught in the midst of another Noble Phantasm. Why don't we find a good vantage point?"

She gestured to the top of a skyscraper that stood about halfway between them and their awaiting prey.

"I suppose we can take the elevator." Yui started toward the building, but Berserker stopped her.

"Mnh!" Berserker grunted. She smiled and held out one arm for Yui. The Master cocked her head in confusion, but stepped toward her.

Berserker put her arm around Yui's waist and bent her knees low, before shooting off into the air, screaming upward to the top of a building in a single bound.

"Well!" Lazarus exclaimed with a laugh. "Shall we take the elevator, or do you have any similar tricks?" he teased Caster.

Caster fought to maintain his resolve and channeling. He was already planning on making everyone a nice meal if they survived, Berserker now deserved an extra dollop of chocolate and cream on her dessert. He allowed himself, at least, a delighted smirk.

"We'll have to take the elevator, unfortunately, unless she decides to help the rest of us."

Lazarus wasted no time getting to work. As Caster set up the territory he began to move earth, piling the dirt into higher fortifications, or creating golems made of mud and rock. He then filled it with water, enchanting it to rush by at an astounding speed. It looked like rapids constantly swirling around the mansion. Before all this, of course, he put up an illusory barrier to keep out the visibility of the golems on guard and the sound of the rushing water. He would be working on these outside fortifications well into the next evening, but remained open to speak to anyone who had questions.

After he set up the territory, Caster began rummaging through the larder and ice box. What would his colleages enjoy best? Duck? Roast suckling pig? Quail?

... Or perhaps instant grain noodles with powdered rank-smelling bouillon? He scowled.

As soon as they got home, Yui wrote a letter detailing their encounter with the Dead Apostle and sent it to the Church.

After that, she went into her living room and stood there for a long moment, feeling lost. She felt like she should be doing something. Anything to prepare. But a fear was beginning to creep up inside her.

She sat down on a sofa and stared blankly at the fireplace.

Digging deeper into the personal stores, Caster carried an armful of assorted goods and got to work in the kitchen. He tied on an apron and held his hair back with his usual handkerchief, humming as he worked.

In a matter of time, he was satisfied. "Dinner's ready!" He looked proudly at the table spread, then slowly frowned as no one responded. "Lazarus? Miss Yui? Come on, i worked hard on this..." He pouted, hands on his hips.

He slid open a window and looked around, spotting his Master covered in mud. "Lazarus! Come eat, it'll keep your strength up!" He leaned back inside and closed the window, then went to look for Yui.

As soon as he found her, alarm struck him from head to toe. "Miss Yui...? Are you all right?" He gently held her hands and shook them from side to side, standing in front of her.

Lazarus didn't even hear his servant as he leashed a particularly strong willed golem. The dirt next to this leyline was incredible! He was having the time of his life!

Yui started to shiver a little. It seemed to take her a second to notice Caster.

"Do you think it's true? Do Dead Apostles really go after virgins?" She tried to give a weak chuckle, but it wasn't nearly convincing. "Isn't it just a legend? But, the news reports said the victims were all men and women my age. Oh god..."

A single tear rolled out of her eye, and she hunched over as a feeling of dread started to wash over her.

Berserker peeked in the room curiously, and when she saw Yui in distress, instantly went to her side and put one hand on her shoulder. "Mmnh?"

Caster sat next to her, resting his hands lightly and kindly on her shoulders. "Even if it's true, we're forming lots of barriers and such to keep him away. You'll be as safe as can be." He untied the kerchief from his hair and dabbed away the tear.

She took a deep breath and tried to compose herself. She tried not to think about it, but the thoughts kept coming. Berserker sadly tugged on her sleeve. "Mmnh..."

Yui sniffled. "I'm fine," she said, then looked up in surprise. "Wait... I understood you! I think. I didn't hear words, but... I knew what you wanted to say."

Berserker smiled and nuzzled into her harm.

Caster smiled, relaxing from the shift of mood. "Well, at least that's a positive development! If you're feeling up to it, we should go down and eat. My flawless masterpiece won't stay warm and fresh forever, and I promise it'll help you feel better."
